EVE 2 has been developed to support the needs of engineers and scientists within spacecraft and aircraft design and mission planning where a better understanding of the problem can be gained through the integration of data from multiple domains and sources. It is often necessary to analyze the behaviors or results of one analysis in one domain in the context of another domain or sets of domains, such analyzing communications requirements while studying trajectory and flight mode requirements. These type of analyses not only cross one or two domains, but cross entire design teams which may be distributed not only within a center but multiple centers. Therefore, it is often necessary to make sure that entire design teams are at the same level of understanding of an overall problem before each person can see how their specific detail is related to the overall problem.
EVE 2.15 leverages the software and years of experience gained in the development and use of the previous releases of the Exploration Visualization Environment and the Synergistic Engineering Environment (SEE) . The SEE, first deployed in 2002, had been previously developed to address the same needs as EVE. The SEE was utilized by the ISS operations and engineering teams to help visualize and analyze the complex ISS environment. SEE was also used to support numerous other missions including ARES 1X, MER, and IRVE, as well as future concept designs such as Lunar Landers, Lunar Outposts, Orion, and Next Generation Launch Systems. Due to licensing restrictions and changes in third party software the SEE software had to be redesigned and recreated with to address these changes. This resulted in the first generation of EVE. EVE was developed to remove the licensing restrictions, and address several underlying architecture issues that developed with years of changing direction of the SEE tool requirements. EVE Version 1 provided the prototype system for the migration to the new architecture and new third party dependencies. Building upon this new design, EVE Version 2 was created bringing more of the overall SEE capabilities into the system and maturing the design. As new capabilities have been added, successive version of the EVE 2.X series have been created. EVE has been successfully supporting NASA’s mission providing support to programs and projects including ISS, Orion, SLS, Mars Outpost designs, Asteroid Rendezvous Missions, Pad Abort, HIAD, Lunar Outpost and Lander designs, and numerous others.
